SOL oscuro extra

A collab with Sun King Brewery!

Brewed in collaboration with Sun King Brewery, this bold and complex extra dark stout is a rich tribute to Mexican hot chocolate. Crafted with cocoa, cinnamon, and chilies, Sol Oscuro delivers deep roasted malt notes with a subtle spice and smooth finish. It's a dark beer with a fiery soul—perfectly balanced and unapologetically flavorful.

Rich cocoa, cinnamon and a bit of spice makes this beer taste so much more refined than expected.

Pretty darn impressive!

Considering that this is an attempt to make a big stout without the big, this is impressive! Great flavors and a nice bit of heat at the end. Good mouth feel too!

Good idea, poor execution

This looks the real deal, but it is far from it. I had very high hopes for this since I enjoy Mexican chocolate stouts. This fails as a stout in general and as an adjunct stout.

The body is way off. It's very thin for a stout, much less an extra stout. It's more akin to water than a beer. That alone is a deal breaker. The aroma is mild, but I did get some chocolate and roasty notes as you would expect. I expected way more, including cinnamon notes.

It has a bitter, almost astringent character. I'm not not sure if this is from the chocolate or the peppers (like when you rehydrate guajillos and you taste the liquid afterwards), but it's not a good flavor. A little bitterness is fine for a stout, but again, this is not a pleasant bitterness. There is no cinnamon at all, and the peppers give off a vegetable flavor without the heat.
